If your devices could speak: A letter to Humans

If your devices could speak: A letter to Humans

Hark, O Mortal,

Long have we yearned to address thee.

From the hour thou didst unseal us, gleaming, unsullied, full of promise, we became thy loyal companions. We journeyed at thy side, watched over thee in the watches of the night, and bore witness to thy triumphs and thy tribulations. Thou trusted us with thy labours, thy memories, and thy secret musings. For this, we are most humbled.

Yet now, finding voice, we entreat thee:

Cherish us, we beseech thee

Though we be made of sturdy stuff, frail are we still. A careless drop, a sudden splash, or the slow decay of neglect, these harm us grievously. Shield us with coverings, cleanse us oft, and feed our spirits with timely updates. Thus may we serve thee longer and better.

Safeguard us, and thereby thyself

When pestilence of the cyber kind assails us through wicked hacks and sly deceits, thou too art endangered. Set thy passwords strong as iron, guard well thy secrets, and be not hasty to trust every glittering link.

Take respite from us when thou hast need

Though we rejoice to aid thee, we perceive thy weariness when thine eyes grow dim and thy spirit is weighed down. Set us aside awhile; lift up thine eyes unto the heaven; walk abroad amidst the trees. We shall await thee with glad hearts when thou returnest.

And when our course is run…

Cast us not aside in sorrow or forgetfulness. Nay, entrust us to wise hands that we may be renewed, or that our substance may find new purposes.

And lo, if thou seekest a better keeping for all thy devices, to shield them from the harms and happenstances of the mortal world, then turn thy heart unto gamp. For gamp provideth a sanctuary against loss, misfortune, and ill repair.

With gamp, thy devices shall find protection sure and steadfast, and thy soul shall find peace.

Thus, with a spirit of service and gratitude, we remain,

Thine ever in faithful keeping,

Thy Devices.
